About this Recipe

Sliders have taken the culinary world by storm! Seems like anything and everything that can be stuffed between two halves of a King's Hawaiian Roll is wildly popular these days. And boy, can people be creative. We've seen Reuben Sliders, Taco Sliders, and even Philly Cheesesteak Sliders!

Compared to those, our heavenly ham and Swiss sliders seem somewhat tame. But when you experience the flavor, tame will be the last adjective on your mind. These sweet and savory mini sandwiches are a family favorite at our house. There are NEVER any leftovers, and there is ALWAYS competition for the last slider in the pan.

Start with King's Original Hawaiian Rolls

As with many good slider recipes, ours starts with a 12 pack of King's Original Hawaiian Rolls. If the original rolls aren't your thing, King's has branched out into many different varieties, including Savory Butter Rolls, Honey Wheat Rolls, Jalapeno Rolls and even Pretzel Hamburger Buns.

Start by cutting the entire package of rolls at one time. You can break them out into individual rolls, but it's tedious and time consuming...and a lot less fun.

Next, place the bottom half of the buns in a baking dish. Then, spread a generous layer of mayonnaise over the buns. If you're looking to change up the flavor somewhat, you can use Greek yogurt, aioli or sour cream instead of mayo.

Layer with Ham and Swiss

Now comes the meat and potatoes...er, meat and cheese technically. Start by covering all the buns with a layer of Swiss cheese. Then, top the Swiss cheese with your favorite variety of ham. Just make sure it's sliced thin. After that, add another layer of Swiss over the slices of ham and cover with the top half of the buns.

Top with Butter Dijon Glaze

The butter, dijon glaze comes next and really punches up the flavor of the sliders. Start by melting 4 tablespoon of butter in a microwave safe bowl. Add dijon mustard, minced onion and poppy seeds to the melted butter. When the glaze is thoroughly mixed, apply liberally to the top of the sliders with a basting brush. Oftentimes we'll even coat the insides of the buns with the glaze for a little extra flavor.

Cooking

With the glaze applied, preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 15 minutes. Remove the sliders from the oven and discard the aluminum foil, then replace in the oven for 5-10 minutes or until the tops of the buns are golden brown.

Remove the baking dish from the oven and let cool. Then, slice your sliders into individual sandwiches and watch as, one-by-one, they magically disappear. We hope these Ham and Swiss Sliders are a match made in heaven for you and your family!

What we like about this recipe!

Nicole - The kids totally think I invented the concept of sliders. And who am I to shatter their image of their mother, lol? Besides, they love these ham and Swiss sliders so much, they really don't care who made them. Just so long as they're hot, and on the table at dinner time.

Mike - Heavenly ham and swiss sliders are one of Nicole's signature dishes, so I tend to stay out of the way during the cooking process. That said, I'm with the kids. I don't care how these got on to my plate, I'm snarffing them down ASAP!

Ingredients

ham and swiss slider ingredients
  • 12 slider buns (We use King's Hawaiian rolls)
  • ½ lb thinly sliced smoked ham
  • 12 slices Swiss cheese
  • ¼ cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 4 tablespoon butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon minced onion
  • 1 tablespoon poppy seeds

Tips and Tricks

  • Make sure to cut the entire package of slider rolls at one time. You can cut them individually, but it's tedious and time consuming.
  • If you want a little more of the butter, dijon glaze flavor, simply brush some on the inside of the buns as well as the outside.
  • If ham isn't your jam, you can make these sliders with sliced turkey, roast beef, bacon and plant-based protein options.
  • The poppy seeds WILL get stuck in your teeth. If you're serving these at a dinner party where people will be talking afterward, you might want to leave them out.
  • Don't be afraid to play around with the glaze. Feel free to add more dijon or even additional ingredients like minced garlic or honey.

FAQ

How long will ham and Swiss sliders last in the refrigerator?

At our house we may never know, since there are never leftovers. But according to the USDA, cooked food can be stored in the refrigerator, in an airtight container, for up to 3 days.

How long do these ham and Swiss sliders take to reheat?

If you have leftover sliders, wrap them in a paper towel, and reheat in the microwave for 1-2 minutes until heated through.

Can you warm these sandwiches up in the oven?

Yes! Just preheat your oven to 350 degrees and cook for approximately 20 minutes.

Is there a vegetarian version of these sliders?

Yes, you can substitute the ham with plant-based meat, hummus, falafel or even eggs.

Do you have to use King's Hawaiian Rolls?

Sure, you could try brioche buns or something similar. But honestly, why? It's hard to improve on perfection.
